The Tord Gustavsen Trio
The Tord Gustavsen Trio
Running Time:
180mins
Genre:
Live Show
Synopsis:
Tord Gustavsen PIANO, ELECTRONICS Sigurd Hole BASS Jarle Vespestad DRUMS Norwegian pianist and composer Tord Gustavsen's music continues to evolve, reaching out with memorable melodies, subtle grooves, musical space, and both gentleness and depth. "I have the clear feeling that stretching out and being creative happens organically, avoiding alienation and stiffness, when done in energetic connection with my roots – with the groundedness and sensuality of the hymns and the spirituals and the lullabies I grew up with." (Tord Gustavsen). The 2014 release ‘Extended Circle’ on ECM Records marked the completion of two trilogies – three albums in the classical piano, bass, drums trio format, followed by a second trilogy in extended ensemble and quartet formats. In 2016, Tord released the strikingly original alternative 'trio' album ‘What was said’ with the voice of Afghan-German singer Simin Tander, where they re-interpreted ancient Norwegian hymns and Sufi poems, in the hauntingly beautiful Pashto language. Now, it is again time for the instrumental trio – for a new take on the classic format that brought Tord’s music to a wide international audience in the first place. A long awaited new trio album will be released August/ September 2018 on ECM Records (title tba.). The material is pointing forwards in musical openness and inventiveness, while at the same time clearly connecting to the quietness and grounded sensuality of Tord’s remarkably successful earlier trio albums. The recent development embraces anew the paradoxically fullsounding simplicity of the ‘Nordic Blues’ that so many people came to love in Gustavsen’s debut album, along with open, Impressionist harmonic landscapes, and a clear overall hymnal and meditative feel. The new album features seven of Tord’s original compositions in dialogue with ancient Scandinavian hymns and three striking re-workings of J. S. Bach Chorales. Tord Gustavsen has toured extensively with his trio, quartet and alternative line-ups in the USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany as well as his native Norway. He has appeared at major festivals in various other countries including Australia, Brazil, Japan, Korea, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Poland; and received a number of critical awards.

Synopsis:
Mayerling is a classic of the Royal Ballet repertory, with its emotional depth, haunting imagery, and one of the most demanding roles ever created for a male dancer. Kenneth MacMillan choreographed a complex work around the psychologically tormented heir to the Habsburg Empire, Crown Prince Rudolf. From the ballet’s start, the glamour of the Austro-Hungarian court is contrasted with undercurrents of sexual and political intrigue that drive the story to its violent climax in a double suicide. The large cast allows for impressive ensembles in addition to the ballet's many solos of distinctive character and pas de deux of disturbing eroticism. This ballet, bursting with intensity, madness and passion, proves that sometimes the truth is more scandalous than fiction.

Genre:
Opera
Director:
Gregory Doran
Starring:
Various Actors
Synopsis:

But in the seventh year of the siege of Troy their innocence is tested, and exposed to the savage corrupting influence of war, with tragic consequences. Virtuoso percussionist Evelyn Glennie collaborates with RSC Artistic Director Gregory Doran to create a satirical futuristic vision of a world resounding with the rhythm of battle, broadcast live to cinemas from Shakespeare's home town. The Greek army is encamped under the walls of Troy and, at the point at which the play begins, the war has reached stalemate. The Greeks are quarrelling amongst themselves. Achilles, their greatest champion, refuses to fight and has withdrawn to his tent with his lover, Patroclus. Equally at odds with themselves, the Trojans are debating the value of continuing the war merely for the sake of keeping Helen. Troilus is much distracted from these military concerns by his love for Cressida, the daughter of a Trojan who has defected to the Greek camp. The young lovers are eagerly assisted by Cressida's uncle Pandarus, who acts as their go-between. However, after only one night together they are parted when Cressida is sent to join her father in the Greek camp. Almost immediately she betrays Troilus with the Greek Diomedes and, discovering this, Troilus is plunged into despair. With the fall of Troy certain, Troilus vows revenge on Achilles.
